Review spreadsheet formulas with traceable checks
Formula review should identify actual formula cells and dependencies.
OfficeCubs · · 2 min read
Formula review should identify actual formula cells and dependencies. A displayed value alone cannot show whether the workbook will recalculate correctly.
Prepare the workbook
Keep an unchanged source copy and explain column meanings, units and date boundaries. Use a spreadsheet or data role with compatible local tools, or the prepared sandbox. Ask for a rejected-row report instead of silently deleting inconvenient records. OfficeCubs text previews do not recalculate formulas; open the final workbook in a spreadsheet application and check representative formulas and totals.
Inputs for this workflow: The original XLSX and a note describing intended calculation rules.
Work through the task
- Inventory formulas and constants in calculated columns.
- Select boundary rows for manual recalculation.
A brief you can adapt
Write formula-review.md with sheet, cell, current formula, concern and suggested correction. Do not edit the source workbook. Highlight hardcoded exceptions separately.
The filenames above are examples. Replace them with your actual inputs and destination before submitting the task.
Review the deliverable
Open the workbook in its spreadsheet application and recalculate representative formulas after any approved correction.
Where this approach can fail
Document-generation libraries may write formulas without calculating cached results.
